More on Montmartre (with kids)

I was just going through photos and came upon these...When we climbed to the top of Montmartre on New Year's Day there was the most beautiful house.

I love the Art Nouveau door and plaque.

Maurice Neumont artist, painter and lithographer lived at 1 Place du Calvaire in the 18th arrondissement.  He died there in 1930.

I'd love to see the interior... someone had a christmas tree up!

An example of Maurice Neumont's work is here.

More to do in Paris next week.

Montmartre with Kids

For this past trip to Paris en famille it was new year's day and we headed up the hill to Montmartre.   Almost like a Spring Day--the kids saw the performers (this dude below was the best).  We all climbed up and down lots of stairs and they got to see the Artists for which Montmartre is famous.... Could be considered a bit shlocky (sp?) but fun all the same!!

Post- Christmas: Paris with the kids...

We arrived in Paris Sunday morning and went straight  to  brunch chez des amis...our french friends who live in NYC but home in paris for the holidays...They happen to live next to an over the top "epic" marché.  So pathetic next to our New York Farmer's MArket... I guess we are years behind the French in this regard... Anyway- two years ago we went to le marché des enfants rouge... this year a 5 min visit to marche beauvais in the 12th arrondissement. I wanted to stay longer!!

Beautiful flowers as usual....

Had to take this pic of the pig...
From there on to our apartment (on loan) in the 10th.  pictures of those later....

Lily of the Valley- May Day in France

I wish I could say this was my photo - Found it on Pinterest and sadly no lily of the valleys to be found in NYC . It reminded me of la fete des muguets (Celebration of Lily of the Valley) in France that takes place on May 1 every year.  When I lived in Paris they seemed to pop out of nowhere-- suddenly It is said that this  for sale on one day only.  This little flower brings back happiness and it is a tradition to give a bunch of them to a loved one on the 1st of May in France.

Vacation in Snowy Paris

December has been a crazy month and my posting has suffered the consequences so now it's time to get back on the horse!  I can't believe that last December we were in Paris!!

It was one of our best family trips and just as perfect for kids as it is for adults.  I never posted these photos but was feeling nostalgic so here they are.

The day we visited the Louvre we also took a ride on the  Ferris Wheel.
Ferris Wheel in Paris
And the day we went to the Tour Eiffel ( always buy tickets well in advance) it was closed due to snow. But I did get some great photos!

under the Eiffel Tower
Because of the complete shutdown ( and not a sign or person in sight) we took the kids to the carousel across the street...

And this is just a photo I took near the carousel.  It was snowing and so beautiful.

If you are planning a trip to Paris just click "Paris" under the labels section of my blog and all my posts on places to stay, see and visit is listed there.

Happy Almost New Year!!!  2012 has a nice ring to it....

This Alice in Wonderland Cake is Over the Top!

The Alice in Wonderland-themed birthday party seems to be on a lot of people's to-do lists. Of all my posts, the Alice in Wonderland birthday post has been the most popular.  Followed by my Paris post.  Paris I understand, but Alice was pretty surprising... I just found this on www.pinterest.com  and couldn't resist sharing:

Not exactly DIY but fun to look at!! I'm thinking I need to do an Alice Bday Party Resource List... Adding it to my to-do list now!

[Post-Buche de Noel]

I know.   A day late and a dollar short but had to show you some of the Christmas "Boosh de Noelle"  (correctly spelled buche de noel )we eyed in the Paris Pastry shops.

A selection:

Super Girly.  Took this for my girls:

Then there is the Purple Mountain Buche  (wha?)

It was part of a vignette..... yes a vignette in the window:

We had the basic buche:

It was a lovely Christmas. How was your holiday?   A special note: Whether in Paris during Christmas or not you must visit la duree.  The serve a huge assortment of macarons  and it is the tea salon to visit while in Paris (or NYC for that matter)

Paris Day 2 - Le marché des enfants rouges

At the suggestion of my new pal at paul et paula  and after  we had somewhat slept off our jet-lag I managed to drag one of my daughters to the Farmer's Market in the marais.  It was worth the visit and I imagine that it is beautiful when the weather is better.  There are lots of little tables and chairs and so many kinds of food to taste and admire!

Le Marche des Enfants Rouges is an open- air market dating from the 1600,s and located in the marais.  It is filled with stands providing specialties from all over the world.  On our visit we saw the usual bounty of cheese, meats, vegetables and fruit as well as Morrocan, Chinese and Korean prepared foods and ingredients.   The stands were beautifully displayed:

Sea Urchins and Langoustines

We also saw some beautiful flowers and Christmas wreathes in the market:

On the walk back to our little apartment I saw these flowers on the sidewalk. It's actually a chain called "happy"  I love the idea of double faced black/color paper to present the flowers.

That's all for now.  Next time some of my favorite  Christmas windows...

A Ferris Wheel in Paris?

I had the best intentions of keeping up the blog while away but between jet lag, children and some bad DSL lines it became impossible.  Now we are in Switzerland with friends so all lines are clear!

So starting from the beginning of our trip in Paris....

Day 1

Carousel du Louvre

We started off at the Metro Station St. Paul where my husband was promptly pick-pocketed.  A first and hopefully last for us... We waited in the Carousel du Louvre (shopping mall at the entrance to the Louvre) for awhile while he called to cancel his cards.  Fun people watching and an upside down pyramid!

Finally, lots of beautiful grand halls and of course ART :

The Mona Lisa:
Just because
Yes- awful photo but what's the pernt?  It's hard to see from 9 ft away and there are so many good images of it in books and on the web...

By the time we had finished it was dark outside and SNOWING.  A Walk through the Jardin des Tuileries with a huge Ferris wheel in sight:

We told our kids that the Ferris wheel was for Christmas decoration only and that the Ferris wheel couldn't possibly be in operation.... We were WRONG.  Each car was enclosed in glass and the photo above at the right bottom is from the very top of the wheel... It was fun but pretty freezing.

More in the next few days....

Posting from Paris

My husband is French so every other year we go to France for Christmas.  We are all French citizens now so we used our French Passports for the first time. Pretty cool going thru the fast lane at customs.

We arrived  in Paris Thursday Dec 16 - tired and scruffy.   This is the first time we have taken our daughters to Paris- usually we go straight to my husband's  little village in Lorraine.  Les filles have been so excited to see all the sights.

I am now a convert to renting an apartment instead of staying in a hotel... at least with children. In France where the hotel rooms are postage stamp sized it is impossible to get one room that will fit all 4 of us which meant 2 rooms or a minimum of 600 euros/night... not happening... so I did a little research on the web and found Ah Paris!

So here's a peek at what can be had for about 150 euros/night:

It's a little one bdrm apt on rue elzivir.   We are on the 6th floor (the last) which must have been the maid's quarters now turned into separate apartments. It's exactly what a Parisian apartment should be warm, cozy, modern and old all at once.

For a change we decided to stay in the 3e arrondissement otherwise known as the Marais. which literally means swamp.   It's pretty hipster- but in a good way.  In  le Marais you can tour the home of Victor Hugo, visit the musee carnavalet or check out the Place des Vosges.  Equally as good is all the shopping here.

In spite of ambitious plans to go out and explore the neighborhood we all fell asleep and dined "in" on French frozen tarte aux poireaux and "couscous in a can" (the French have remarkably delicious canned goods)  I'm not so sure I should be admitting that last bit ...

I have lots of ideas of places to take the 2 kiddles; Tour Eiffel, the Louvre, Pompidou Centre, Notre Dame, Ile St. Louis, Antiquing, Shopping and of course lots of walking!!   We'll see how much of that list we can get done...

That's all for now... A demain!
