Birthday Party Glitter Tattoos

If you are looking for an impressive birthday party activity this is a keeper!  I've used it many times and it is always a hit.  Don't be surprised if kids leave with more than one tattoo!

I've used the  Glimmer Party in a box Tattoo kit numerous times. The link takes you to Amazon but you can go to the Glimmer website and there are tons of tattoo stencils to choose from (for boys and  girls).  It's super easy and the kits comes with everything you need.

When I took this picture I left out an important step: stencils come with stick-em on them so after placing the stencil on the skin it is easy to brush on the tattoo glue. Next sprinkle the glitter... the photos tell the rest!

That's it for today....

A Purple Party at Martha Stewart

Last week I was invited to attend the taping of Pippa's * Purple (Birthday) Party on the Martha Stewart Show.  Not a usual occurrence, for shore!!   I brought a pal along and because we were due 45 minutes prior to airtime we were able to see everyone (in purple of course) put the finishing touches on the set.  Here are photos of preparation moments before going on air:

Darcy Miller, mother of 3, party planner extra with lots of creative ideas!  I'm always a sucker for themed birthday parties and this did not disappoint!!

[All Photos below - Photo credit: Rob Tannenbaum/The Martha Stewart Show]

We saw some great ideas for favors and decor:

What would a purple party be without  cassis creme whoopee pies?

David Crofton ( co-owner with his wife Dawn Casale ) of  One Girl Cookies in Brooklyn demonstrated how to make these whoopie pies

And one of the crafts was a must-make project. You'll never guess how its done so check on Martha's website!!

There were so many great  ideas too many to list here but all this and more can be found on the  Martha Stewart website.

You too can attend a show by going to the Martha Stewart website.  It's lots of fun and an
"only- in-New York"experience!!

In the meantime I'm working on a Hawaiian Luau Party for my youngest.  Ideas and photos to follow soon!

Have a great week.  More Martha later!

* Pippa is Darcy's youngest .  I'd say she is her mother's mini-me. You can see Pippa too on the Martha Stewart website.

Birthday Party Craft- Marbleized Book Marks

Last year I wrote a post about an Alice in Wonderland Birthday Party I threw for my eldest daughter.  Unexpectedly (to me at least)  it gets the most views on my blog... Guess it's telling me something.

I am visiting my family in Detroit and decided to take the kids to the Maker Faire over the weekend.  It was a science craft-driven fair (organized by the group of  makezine.com websites).  Lots of fun stuff to do and see but this was the activity that my kids loved the most so here's my first tutorial...

Marbleized Book Marks

The Result:

You'll need:

  • 1 can shaving cream ( any brand will do, just nothing with menthol!!)
  • Food Coloring
  • cardboard square at least 12"x12"
  • aluminum foil
  • long skewer sticks or wooden dowels
  •  Spackling tool
  • strips of paper sized for book marks.
The Steps:

1. Cover a surface with aluminum foil. I use a dry cleaner shirt cardboard. Tape to table. Spray out some of the shaving cream on to the surface.

2. Using a dropper,  add food coloring of choice.

3. Use a dowel or wooden stick to swirl the colors around.  Don't over do it - you'll end up with a brown mess. Here we swirled horizontally.  (It's not obvious but the  stick is at the bottom of the  right-hand corner of this photo.)

4. Here we used the stick to pull the colors down vertically.

5. place bookmark-sized paper on top of marbleized shaving cream.  Lift off and put down on a clean piece of foil.

6.  Using a spackling knife scrape off the foam starting from the bottom and scraping upward.
Lift off foil, let dry  and you have a bookmark.

We used basic 20 lb. paper but next time I'd like to try it with a heavier weight paper and possibly try covering a box with it...

I hope this helps with at least one activity for your next birthday party or maybe a rainy Saturday afternoon one day this Fall.... Tell me what you make with your beautiful paper!

This Alice in Wonderland Cake is Over the Top!

The Alice in Wonderland-themed birthday party seems to be on a lot of people's to-do lists. Of all my posts, the Alice in Wonderland birthday post has been the most popular.  Followed by my Paris post.  Paris I understand, but Alice was pretty surprising... I just found this on www.pinterest.com  and couldn't resist sharing:

Not exactly DIY but fun to look at!! I'm thinking I need to do an Alice Bday Party Resource List... Adding it to my to-do list now!

Laura's Alice in Wonderland Birthday Party Celebration

Over the weekend we celebrated  my daughter's 10th birthday party chez nous. We planned it around an Alice in Wonderland tea party theme.... She asked her friends to dress up as their favorite character and most girls were either Alice or the Red Queen.  For decoration   I started with the table. We covered it with a white tablecloth and then used a big frog and little rabbits as the centerpiece. I found the frogs, rabbits, ribbon and other things in the Flower District at  JamaliGardens. I also scattered little bits of candy wrapped in a playing card motif (partycity.com)  and pieces from our chess set.   I think Fresh flowers would have been nice to add some color but next time!

Mexican cut outs were hung over the table  and we  posted big playing cards on the front door  from www.partycity.com

After eating pigs in blankets and sliders  the girls went to the craft table and  got themselves busy putting on tattoos. These particular tattoos could be colored in.    After that I found a really cool idea  on this blog A Field Journal: Merrie May (see her creation below left)   I thought the kids could have fun making their own little cornet to hold a  bunch of flowers (Ikea $1.59 each) to put on their bedroom door.  Here are some examples of what the kids came up with....
The inspiration

What some of the girls came up with....

I'm not really one for this type of thing but the piece de resistance was the Barbie cake made by my friend Paulette http://sugarlovingfashionista.blogspot.com/ (amazing pastry chef) The cake was exactly what Laura wanted.  Our Barbie version of the White Queen...

The White Queen in all her glittering glory!
It was also a fab conversation piece . Every body wanted to see how I was going to cut the thing.... which was interesting and it got especially hairy when I got to the one legged part of Barbie... apparently 2 legs does something weird to the cake  so Paulette had to remove one leg.  Everybody wanted to see the inside of the cake....
Barbie cake

And not for nuthin' but that cake was moist and delish!! Wish my kid had preferred chocolate but oh well.  The kids seemed to have a great time and each one left with a little goodie bag filled with a mini deck of cards, mini teapot and some candies in a pretty little bag

Enough about this birthday- I gotta get planning the next one for this weekend!!
